The following quote is some advice given to me by ML:
One of the intellectual legacies from Hegel, but most identified with Marx is a dialectic approach to issues. If you run into a position it is your job to present all of the opposing arguments against it in the hopes of driving synthesis. This dialectic approach can be very useful but like most philosophical tools does not need to be applied everywhere and at all times nor is it the only tool of potential use.
Sometimes, without even knowing the philosophical background, we use these methods reflexively and sometimes even pathologically. Since they are useful in a lot of areas we decide they need to be used everywhere.
